“Planes no longer land at Charleroi airport”: flights diverted and canceled due to weather conditions

This Saturday, around ten flights to Charleroi airport were diverted to other Belgian airports. Departures were canceled. Delays are also expected.

“Charleroi airport cannot receive flights”, alerted us via the orange button Alert us this Saturday Michel, passenger on a flight. “The planes are diverted to Liège.” But not only that: another passenger also tells us that his plane, leaving from Lanzarote to Charleroi, finally landed in Ostend.

Charleroi airport confirms “around ten planes diverted to other airports” due to climatic conditions. These decisions, belonging to the airlines and its pilots and not to the airport, were taken due to the low visibility and the fog that had fallen heavily over the country. “Some planes tried to land but didn’t succeed, so they decided to go elsewhere.”
They decided to move to other airports.”
continues the airport spokesperson.

Four cancellations at the start are also to be deplored, for the same reasons. “A few delays” are also to be expected. “Temperatures being below 0 degrees, it is necessary to de-ice the planes and runways”we are told. According to information provided by Charleroi airport, these events took place mainly between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

What can passengers do?

These deviation or cancellation decisions were taken mainly by Ryanair – but also Wizzair. It is these airlines which are responsible for taking care of passengers, their expenses or reimbursement. Impacted passengers must therefore contact their company.

According to one of our alerts, shuttles to Charleroi must be set up. “Ryanair leaves us in total limbo”he laments. According to him, many travelers have already used carpooling applications.
