The Minister of Health Yannick Neuder went this Saturday, January 11 to the private hospital of Pays de Savoie (HPPS) located in Annemasse, in Haute-Savoie, following the attack on six caregivers this Wednesday. Two brothers allegedly attacked emergency personnel, injuring six people who were subject to ITT for 7 to 15 days.
“In a meeting with Gérald Darmanin [ministre de la Justice, NDLR] and Bruno Retailleau [ministre de l’Intérieur]we wish to clearly display this zero tolerance towards attacks in general on holders of public authority, but particularly on caregivers”declared Yannick Neuder upon his arrival at the establishment at the end of the morning.
“Caregivers are particularly exposed during these periods of flu but also in general, because the tension on the health system in France is unfortunately there. But it is intolerable so there are a certain number of measures that we want to strengthen very quickly”announced the Minister of Health, former deputy (LR) for Isère.
The government plans in particular to set up “reinforced penalties for attacks on caregivers” : “This is something important, it allows us to also be able to count all attacks on caregivers. Whether in hospital facilities or in the city, all caregivers are exposed”estimated Mr. Neuder.
It is also envisaged, in the event of aggression, “to be able to replace the filing of a complaint by the establishment so as not to cause reprisals against the caregivers themselves, their families, their children, their parents, by anonymizing the filing of a complaint in the name of the ‘health establishment’he added.
Yannick Neuder arrived at the end of the morning at the Pays de Savoie private hospital to meet the management of the establishment, the staff, and visit the emergency department where the attack took place. Among the fourteen personnel involved, “everyone is in a state of psychological shock“, told us a spokesperson for the establishment. Six suffer from “facial swelling“and for some of them”a cracked rib, trauma to an ankle or a broken hand”.
“It was quite violent, everything happened really quickly”recalls Kimberly Seco Cordero, secretary of the emergency department present this Saturday morning. “There was a small altercation with the nurse who was working that night, someone else arrived and it got out of hand. Everyone intervened to stop them but they were very strong. We didn’t failed to hold them until the police arrived.”
“It’s the psychological aspect that is the most complicated, returning to work in these conditions. We hope that after what happened, we can have a change in our hospital and in the others. We are asking for ‘have security personnel in the emergency room at all times, someone who can act to have more security in our department’plaide Kimberly Seco Cordero.
The suspects, two brothers aged around 30, fled in a car after the attack. They were arrested this Thursday, January 9 at noon and placed in police custody. The staff exercised their right of withdrawal and the emergency room of the private clinic should reopen Monday January 13.
