We thought that the partisan debate could finally begin. On December 20, the Federal Council announced the “material end of the Switzerland-EU negotiations” after years of rapprochements, nervous breakdowns and ruptures. And with what a cast! The President of the European Commission in person for a lightning, somewhat pompous declaration, evoking a “historic” agreement. At his side, the eager President of the Confederation, Viola Amherd, suspected of wanting to complete the file for the photo, before heading off in the English direction towards Brig for her retirement.
This was followed by after-sales service with three federal advisors. Despite a few moments of hesitation in front of the press, the main thing was elsewhere: mission accomplished for a federal executive often accused of slowness. But rather than a debate, a game of hide and seek began.
