The National Zoological Garden of Rabat is celebrating its 13th anniversary by offering, until January 14, a series of educational and festive activities to raise public awareness of the importance of preserving biodiversity. This emblematic place, inaugurated in 2012, has welcomed more than 6 million visitors, consolidating its position among the most popular attractions in the Moroccan capital.

With a collection of more than 2,000 animals spread across 190 species, the zoo is home to the largest captive population of Atlas lions in the world. This success is the result of an ambitious conservation strategy which places the preservation of endemic Moroccan and African species at the heart of its mission.

The Rabat Zoological Garden has adopted a proactive approach to protect biodiversity. Its strategy is based on the creation of founding nuclei for threatened or extinct species in the wild. Every year, the zoo records births among emblematic species such as Atlas lions, bald ibises and Thompson’s gazelles.

In 2024, the zoo recorded more than 220 births, demonstrating the effectiveness of its breeding programs. He also enriched his collection with the acquisition of 50 new animals, including Saharan antelopes and rare birds such as the Houbara bustard. These acquisitions, made possible by international partnerships, reinforce the zoo’s role as a sanctuary for African wildlife.

Beyond its conservation vocation, the Rabat Zoological Garden plays a central role in scientific research. He conducts in-depth studies on African ecosystems and the habitats of Moroccan species, in collaboration with national and international researchers. This work aims to develop solutions to preserve fragile ecosystems and to raise awareness among future generations of the importance of biodiversity.

The zoo has also implemented educational initiatives, with workshops and programs aimed at young visitors. These activities aim to awaken their curiosity and strengthen their commitment to nature.

To meet public expectations and consolidate its leading position, the Zoological Garden has initiated a transition towards digitalization. Through connected platforms, visitors can now access interactive content, animal information and virtual tours, enhancing the educational and immersive experience.

A strategic plan has been deployed to improve infrastructure and guarantee animal welfare. This program includes the enrichment of the animal collection, the improvement of habitats and the development of a regional wildlife study center.
