Uzès: The medieval garden labeled Remarkable Garden

Beautiful consecration for the Medieval Garden of Uzès, which celebrates this same year its 30 years of existence. Built in 1994 on the site of the former city prison, it was transformed into a garden in 1995 thanks to an association of volunteers.

What is the Remarkable Garden label?

The Remarkable Garden label is a quality label established in 2004which distinguishes gardens and parks that present cultural, aesthetic, historical and botanical interests. This label is issued by the Ministry of Culture for a duration of five years and is renewable. To be eligible for this label, the Garden must have remarkable plants, ecological management, meet aesthetic and botanical standards and participate in European Heritage Days.

This emblematic place of the ducal city received the Remarkable Garden label for the end of year celebrations. A lovely Christmas gift. “Receiving this label is recognition of a higher level, it is thanking the volunteers and visitors“, rejoices Sylvian, an employee of the Garden for many years.

Medieval garden of Uzès: undeniable assets

Nettles, thyme and wild flowers, these are 500 varieties of plants which can be found in the Garden. And among the treasures that make it a remarkable place, we note among others the carob tree and the roofer.

The first gives carob flour, a thickener, and the second gives caper. And, beyond its botanical qualities, the Medieval Garden is also a historic site, its two emblematic towers: the Bishop's Tower and the King's Tower have been classified as Historic Monuments since 1979.

Not benefiting fromno subsidythe finances of the Garden are essentially based on memberships to the association (which are €15 per year for one person and €25 for a duo) and on entry tickets, the site attracts no less than 25,000 visitors each year.

The Remarkable Garden label will be officially inaugurated during the festivities marking the 30th anniversary of the Garden, which will begin in Aprilmonth of its reopening, and will continue over a period of one month. Thanks to this new title, the Medieval Garden hopes “strengthen its visibility among Uzégeois“.

A garden anchored in its territory

The Medieval Garden participates in particular in an active manner in European Heritage Days and at the Avril en stroll event. And to mark this local anchoring, the Garden is involved by being a partner of the MFR le Grand-mas.

It provides students with seeds and flower plants to carry out cultivation trials. These crops are then offered for sale in the Medieval Garden.
