As reported by Rue20, for the first time since the closure of commercial customs in 2018, a vehicle loaded with goods today crossed the city of Melilla towards Beni Ansar.
According to the same sources, the bus was carrying household appliances and cleaning products, and crossed the Melilla border post around ten o’clock this Wednesday morning. Upon his arrival, he had to complete the corresponding entry formalities on the Moroccan side.
On the other hand, in the city of Ceuta no information has been received regarding a similar crossingand goods and merchandise transport companies were not informed of the procedures to follow.
This is the first reintroduction into Morocco of goods from Melilla and Ceuta in six and a half years.
It should be noted that a few days ago the Spanish Government confirmed that the opening of the customs of Ceuta and Melilla with Morocco, agreed almost three years ago after the meeting between President Pedro Sánchez and the King Mohammed VI, is “very close” to coming to fruition.
For now, the exchanges should be minimal and highly regulated during this initial phase. Products such as fruits, vegetables and fish will be exported from Morocco. Spain will export hygiene and cleaning products, household appliances and electronic products.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries have improved significantly since Spain recognized Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Saharaconsidered the most serious, credible and realistic option to resolve the conflict, which has persisted since Spain left the region and the end of the colonial era more than 40 years ago .
