Can we still call it a joke? During a press conference held this Tuesday at Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump raised the possibility of using “economic force” to ensure the merger of Canada and the United States. He had previously refused to rule out the idea of using military force to annex the Panama Canal and Greenland, all in the name of U.S. national security.
“That would really be something,” said the president-elect, referring to the annexation of Canada. “If we got rid of the artificially drawn line and looked at what that would look like, national security would be much better off.” [Les Canadiens] are great, but we spend hundreds of billions to protect them. We spend hundreds of billions a year to take care of Canada. We are losing trade deficits. »
During Justin Trudeau’s visit to Mar-a-Lago in late November, Trump told his guest that Canada could avoid the tariffs he was threatening to impose on its products entering the United States by becoming the 51st state of his country. What seemed like a joke may be becoming an obsession for the man who will soon once again become the most powerful man on the planet.
