The canton is putting its hand into its wallet to fight against the shortage of nursing staff. Anne Hiltpold, PLR State Councilor in charge of the Department of Public Education, presented on Tuesday the new scholarship aimed at nursing students. The operation began at the start of the 2024 school year. The State provides 1.72 million francs as part of the 2025-2028 service contract signed with the Haute école de santé. Depending on the implementation of the initiative for strong nursing care, approved by 65% of the people in 2021, the Confederation should double this contribution.
“We have noticed a disenchantment with the profession since the pandemic. We must upgrade its image. These scholarships aim to attract new students and avoid dropouts during training,” explained the magistrate. To meet the health needs of the canton, the High School of Health should train 250 graduates per year. In 2023, there would be half as many, or only 114.
