A 38-year-old woman gave birth outside, then abandoned her newborn in the street on January 1 in Trois-Rivières.
She was apprehended by authorities and charged Friday. She will be back in court on Tuesday for her release hearing.
A publication ban protects the identity of the mother, but the denunciation obtained by TVA Nouvelles indicates that she faces an accusation of having failed to provide the things necessary for the existence of her baby thus endangering the baby’s life.
According to our information, the mother was seriously intoxicated. She was also hospitalized before being transferred to prison.
The newborn, who was naked, survived thanks to the rapid intervention of a passerby who was in the area, at the corner of Royale and Bureau streets, and who kept the baby warm until ‘upon the arrival of the first responders.
He was in critical condition and was quickly transferred to a hospital. The baby’s current state of health is unknown.
Additional charges could be filed against the woman.
