Every day, around 135,000 cross the Swiss border. Residents of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the vast majority of whom go to work in the Canton of Geneva (85%), but also to the Canton of Vaud (13%) or even that of Valais (2%). These are some of the figures from a recent INSEE study devoted to the journeys to work of cross-border workers in the region.
The French Genevan concentrates cross-border workers
We thus learn that the average distance of these journeys to work in Switzerland is 28 kilometers, more than double that of other employed workers in the region. Since 2010, INSEE has noted that cross-border workers live further and further from their place of work since this average distance has increased by 11% in 14 years.
We will also note that 98% of cross-border workers actually reside in four employment zones: French Geneva (73%), Annecy (12%), Le Chablais (10%) and The Arve Valley (3%).
Men and women attracted by the opportunities offered by the Swiss economy. In 2021, remember that GDP per capita is 1.9 times higher in Switzerland than in France with salary levels that are among the highest in the world.
-As INSEE points out, “the agglomeration effect, observed in metropolises, as well as the limited availability of land near the border contribute to the settlement of cross-border workers in more distant areas”. The French Genevan alone accounts for 73% of the cross-border workers in this study. In 2021, no less than 53% of employed workers residing in this territory carried out their activity in Switzerland, an increase of 7.3% since 2010.
