After several decades in the category of least developed countries, Senegal is preparing to change its economic status. The United Nations adopted a resolution granting the country a transitional period of five years to finalize this exit.

This is good news for the Senegalese economy. In a historic decision, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on December 19, 2024 confirming Senegal’s withdrawal from the category of least developed country (LDC), thus consecrating the development progress made by the country.

This graduation, which will be effective after a transitional period of five years, marks according to the UN “un momentous event » which means that Senegal “ has made good progress towards achieving at least part of its development objectives ».

To support this transition, resolution 79/230 invites Senegal to develop a specific national strategy, in collaboration with United Nations agencies and its various bilateral, regional and multilateral trade and development partners.

The UN specifies that this exit from the LDC group must be done without disrupting ongoing development programs. The organization takes into account the challenges that Senegal continues to face, including the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change on food and energy security and market stability.

Cambodia also benefits from this same decision to withdraw from the list of LDCs, with similar provisions for its transition period.

Furthermore, several African countries have previously made this same progress: Botswana (1994), Cape Verde (2007) and Equatorial Guinea (2017) have also left the list of LDCs, reflecting notable progress in terms of development. .
