SAFIETOU DIOP FALL’S RADICAL PROPOSAL AGAINST RAPE CASES

Guest of the morning show Salam Senegal on Radio Senegal, Madame Safietou Diop Fall, president of the “Siggil Jiguène” network, addressed several current topics, including the recent case of rape followed by murder which shook the country.

Faced with the emotion aroused by these tragedies, in particular the cases that occurred in Joal and Malika, Safietou Diop Fall presented her condolences to the bereaved families and recalled the legal achievements obtained thanks to women’s struggles. “Three generations of women fought so that we had laws, like that of 1999 against violence against women and that of 2021 criminalizing rape and pedophilia. But laws alone are not enough. »

She urged women’s movements and all Senegalese women to become more involved in putting an end to this violence, while remaining anchored in an “Africanist and positivist feminism, based on our cultural values.”

According to her, vigilance is a fundamental element in preventing these crimes. “The responsibility of families is engaged. We must rediscover our family values and educate our children at home and at school. Teachers must play their role as parents, as in our times. »

She called on the media to contribute to this educational mission: “The media must offer programs that protect and educate, because some current content is harmful to our children. »

Ms. Fall also denounced the impact of drugs in schools and societies: “There are strategies to destroy our youth through drugs, but this is not an excuse for families to abandon their role. The educational base must be strengthened to instill solid values in our girls and boys. »

For Ms. Fall, the application of laws poses a problem. “Senegal has ratified numerous conventions, but their application remains insufficient. » She pleads for tougher sanctions: “We must castrate the guilty before sending them to prison to send a strong signal to those who would consider committing these acts. »

Safietou Diop Fall calls for general mobilization: “All women in Senegal must come together to combat this violence, relying on our cultural values and fighting against harmful influences. »
