The hedge snail has been named animal of the year 2025 by the nature protection organization Pro Natura. Alongside countless other organisms, this discreet gastropod plays a fundamental role in the formation and health of soils.
The hedge snail is present throughout Switzerland, in open forests and groves, parks, hedges and gardens, Pro Natura explains on Friday. With a diameter of 2.5 centimeters and a color range from creamy white to pastel red, its shell is among the largest and most varied of native snails.
-An ally of gardeners, the gastropod feeds mainly on dead and wilted plants or the remains of small animals. It is therefore part of one of the most important production chains in the world: soil production.
