Ile-de-France gains inhabitants but Paris loses them

Saccording to the latest figures from INSEE, Ile-de- officially has 12,380,964 inhabitants (reference population as of 1is January 2022). That is 263,832 more in six years, for an average annual increase of 0.36%, slightly higher than the national trend (+ 0.35%). Ile-de-France remains, by far, the most populated region of the country, which now officially has 67,760,573 inhabitants (excluding Mayotte).

The demographic growth of Ile-de-France is still based solely on the predominance of births over deaths. A natural balance which generates an average annual increase in the population of 0.77%. Net migration (ratio between arrivals and departures in the region) is still in deficit (-0.41% per year), slowing down demographic growth in the Ile-de-France region. This demographic growth is observed in all departments of the region, with the exception, once again, of . If the capital remains the most populated territory in Ile-de-France, its population increased from 2,190,327 inhabitants in 2016 to 2,113,705 inhabitants in 2022 (- 0.59% on average per year). A loss of inhabitants which is explained by a significant migratory deficit (- 1.18% per year) – due in part to the cost of housing – insufficiently compensated by the share of the natural balance (+ 0.58% per year).

This phenomenon of migratory deficit affects all the Ile-de-France departments with the exception of Seine-et- (+ 0.02%). Departments which, unlike Paris, can count on compensation of the natural balance. And this, thanks to a natural balance which still asserts itself as the largest in the region (+ 1.14% per year), much higher than the deficit in net migration (- 0.38%). After Paris and Seine-Saint-Denis, Hauts-de-Seine remains the third most populated territory in Ile-de-France with 1,647,435 inhabitants. And this, although the department is the one which has gained the least (+ 0.45% per year), tied with the department of which remains the most populated in the outer suburbs (1,470,778 inhabitants).
