[Article publié le jeudi 02 janvier 2025 à 16h27 et mis à jour à 16h45] Vehicle deliveries from the American Tesla have declined (-1%) in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to figures published this Thursday, January 2. Ua first in the manufacturer's history. A result which is explained in particular by a decline of 3.9% in production, affected by temporary site closures. In Germany, the manufacturer's giant factory was hit by arson and then a strike, while in Texas and China, sites temporarily closed while modernization work was carried out.
Purchase incentive measures have also failed to stem the decline in demand for an aging range of electric vehicles. The company also suffered from increasing competition.
In detail, the American automobile manufacturer delivered 495,570 vehicles during the three months preceding December 31, which constitutes a record. The consensus of the 15 analysts surveyed by LSEG nevertheless counted on 503,269 units. The Texan group thus missed its target, which predicted, in October, a “slight increase” deliveries over the entire financial year. Deliveries for all of 2024 totaled 1.79 million, 1.1% less than a year ago. The average estimate of 19 analysts surveyed by LSEG was 1.806 million units.
As a result, the company's stock fell sharply on the stock market. On Wall Street, Tesla shares fell 5.9% to $379.88 in early trading compared to a gain of 0.49% for the Standard & Poor's 500.
However, Wedbush Securities analysts still say to themselves “ very confident » in Tesla's ability to rebound in 2025. A feeling shared by investors, the consensus of analysts, established by FactSet, counting on 2.07 million vehicles delivered this year, which would constitute an increase of nearly 17% over one year.
-BYD continues its growth
Despite this decline, Tesla managed to retain its title as the world's leading manufacturer of all-electric vehicles, beating its Chinese competitor BYD by a hair. He has for its part announced a sharp increase in its sales in 2024. A new sign of the company's meteoric growth. The latter sold more than 4.2 million vehicles last year, all categories combined, an increase of 41.3% compared to last year (3,024,417 units), according to a press release published Wednesday by the company.
The company, which adopts the slogan in English « Build Your Dreams » (Build Your Dreams), had already announced in October that it had surpassed its global rival Tesla for the first time in terms of quarterly turnover.
The Chinese flagship achieved 88% of its passenger vehicle sales on the domestic market in December, according to figures communicated by BYD. But the situation is darker on the international market, where customs duties on Chinese vehicles have tightened last year. The rapid growth in sales of BYD and other electric vehicle manufacturers in the domestic market has, in fact, been partly facilitated by generous subsidies from Beijing. The majority of the manufacturer's sales in 2024 concern plug-in hybrid cars (58% of total units sold).
