Several accidents and road trips marked New Year’s Day in Quebec on Wednesday. Snow will continue to fall in several regions of Quebec. Forecast.
A busy New Year’s Day
Temperatures were near freezing in many places Wednesday. Motorists were therefore surprised by the snow and slippery roads. Several road exits were reported, lanes were closed to traffic, travel was complicated in several sectors.
More snow
The temperature will drop below freezing, and the snow will continue throughout the day on Thursday, but certain areas will be spared. This is the case for Outaouais, Basses-Laurentides, Lanaudière, Montérégie and the greater Montreal region. Estrie, Beauce, Capitale-Nationale, Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Bas-Saint-Laurent and Haute-Côte-Nord should see some additional snow accumulations.
Snowy roads
We will therefore have to monitor highways 15 and 117 north of Saint-Jérôme, highway 20 east of Drummondville, but particularly highway 10 between Granby and Sherbrooke. Further east, Highway 20 between Quebec and Rivière-du-Loup could be snow-covered, as well as Highway 40 near the Capitale-Nationale, and Highway 73. Unsurprisingly, Highway 175 in the Réserve wildlife of the Laurentians could be snowy and slippery.
Convincing bursts
Visibility could be a problem in several areas, as the winds will blow with great intensity. We are talking about gusts of up to 60 km/h in Estrie and the Montreal region. Gusts could exceed 50 km/h in Outaouais, and 40 km/h in Mauricie and the Quebec region. In Gaspésie and on the North Shore, gusts between 50 and 60 km/h are expected.
