ANNOUNCED REPEAL OF THE AMNESTY LAW IN SENEGAL: Real desire to do justice or political vendetta?

Something promised, something due, one could say about the repeal of the amnesty law in Senegal, announced by the Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, on December 27, during his General Policy Declaration (DGP). We remember that the president of PASTEF had promised the Senegalese people to undermine this law taken under the conditions we know, in the last hours of Macky Sall’s reign. And although it freed the two emblematic figures who today hold the reins of power, this law is on the verge of being called into question. Real desire to do justice or political vendetta? Very smart who could answer this question. But everything suggests that the Diomaye Faye/Ousmane Sonko duo is determined to have Macky Sall’s skin. To think that the two former fierce adversaries of the former Senegalese president are engaged in a witch hunt is a step that some have quickly taken. And we cannot blame them completely. Especially since the two men do not seem ready to forgive the native of Fatick who made them see bad things when they were in opposition. Even if he defends the opposite, everything suggests that the Diomaye Faye/Ousmane Sonko tandem is in a logic of political revenge.

Macky Sall risks drinking the chalice of shame to the dregs

However, should we pity Macky Sall? Nothing is certain. Because, as the saying goes, “he who sows the wind reaps the storm”. As we know, the desires of the former Senegalese president to remain in power beyond his constitutional mandates, and against the will of his people, provoked violence which left around sixty dead. Corpses that the new regime refuses to write off. We could even, without risk of being mistaken, say that by announcing the repeal of the amnesty law, Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko heard the cry from the heart of the parents of these numerous victims who have always loudly demanded cry of legal proceedings against Macky Sall and company. And it is a truism to say that the former president’s sleep is now troubled. Because he seems on the verge of being overtaken by his own turpitudes. In any case, Macky Sall may not escape the harsh grips of Justice for two reasons: Firstly, the new masters of Dakar benefit from the support of the parents of the victims. Second, these new leaders control the National Assembly. This means that any project aimed at persecuting the leaders of the old regime should pass through the hemicycle like a letter to the post office. Suffice to say that Macky Sall risks drinking the chalice of shame to the dregs. Anything that should challenge the continent’s leaders on the need to make good governance their compass. In any case, in all likelihood, this affair risks condemning Macky Sall to living far from his native land. But, beyond the Macky Sall camp, what could be the consequences of applying this decision to the country of Terranga? Aren’t we risking rubbing salt in the wound? It’s wait and see.
