Philippe Dupouy, president of the Gers departmental council, sent the Prime Minister, François Bayrou, and the President, Emmanuel Macron, a reminder of the unpaid debts that the State owes to his department. A hefty bill of more than 40 million euros.
In a tweet published on the social network “I sent a reminder to François Bayrou, Prime Minister, of the unpaid debts that the State owes to the Gers”. A reminder accompanied by an amount of 43.1 million euros corresponding to the undercompensation of social charges transferred by the State to the Departments for two decades.
Beyond a media outing, Philippe Dupouy takes the opportunity to alert the government about the situation in Gers and all local authorities who are starting the new year under budget cuts : “We ask the government to be vigilant. Our social spending is naturally increasing with revenues collapsing and we no longer have fiscal autonomy. We are in an extremely tense situation.”
274 million euros in unpaid debts in Hérault
As France 3 Occitanie points out, Gers is not the only department in difficulty in the region. The president of the Hérault departmental council, Kleber Mesquida, had already alerted the State on the same subject but with a much higher amount. Since in Hérault, the State's unpaid bills amount to 274 million euros.
At the beginning of January, the government of François Bayrou will examine the 2025 finance bill. In the meantime, via the special law passed in mid-December, aims to organize a provisional situation until the adoption of a “ real” budget.
