Parents have been up in arms for several weeks and are threatening new actions at the start of the school year in January.
Two classes threatened with closure in Saint-Jean-du-Gard for September 2025, one in nursery school and the other in elementary school. Parents have been up in arms for several weeks and are threatening new actions at the start of the school year in January.
“Of the 8 classes in our village, 2 closures would represent 25% of our schools eliminated” explains the collective of village parents.
The last week before the holidays, the school was occupied by parents from 7:30 a.m. and continuously all day. Local elected officials came to support as well as Mayor Pierre Aiguillon. At the same time, a petition is currently approaching 1,300 signatures.
After the Christmas holidays, parents announce that the school will be busy again. And a delegation will be received on January 10 at the academic directorate of national education services (DASEN). Everyone hopes to be heard as the next school map is discussed in all territories in the coming weeks. “We hope that we take a good look at the context of our schools, that decisions are not based on accounting and budgetary criteria alone, but on qualitative criteria, both for the working conditions of teachers and ATSEM and for the well-being and daily learning of our children.”
