The president of Médecins du monde, Jean-François Corty, asked the government, Saturday December 28, on franceinfo, to “not to make the same mistakes in Mayotte that the French authorities made for 20 years”before a trip by François Bayrou and several ministers to the archipelago, “that is to say, leaving nearly 100 to 150,000 people in slums”after the passage of Cyclone Chido.

Jean-François Corty pleads for “better support” in the 101st French department, “the image of the metropolis”. The NGO Doctors of the World has “around thirty” actors on the ground, “emergency doctors are gradually arriving as reinforcements” car “the needs are immense”.

Many victims are “distant, at a distance from the hospital center” who cannot absorb “all medical needs”,“these are people abandoned in the slums who are afraid to move”describes the president of Médecins du monde.

The NGO will provide solutions, he lists, by carrying out marauding, mobile actions, sending logisticians, etc. And wish that “the apprehension of epidemics like cholera” either “a subject of public health”.

“Preventing these epidemics must be an absolute emergency”insists Jean-François Corty while vaccines must be transported to the island. At the beginning of 2024, Mayotte was faced with a cholera epidemic, and on this occasion, “a prevention campaign allowed 35,000 people to be vaccinated”underlines the member of the NGO.
