The universal charger becomes compulsory in France from this Saturday, December 28 to equip smartphones, tablets or even headphones. All small electronic devices sold new must now be equipped with a USB-C type charging port. This corresponds to the application of a European directive adopted in 2022. The idea is to reduce waste and avoid the multiplication of cables.
With our correspondent in Brussels, Jean-Jacques Héry
The primary objective of the measure is to limit the production of electronic waste, which has until now been favored by the proliferation of cables and battery chargers for devices of different brands.
« In the future, we will not have to buy the charger that goes with the phone if we have a charger at home that works “, said former Belgian socialist MEP Marc Tarabella on the day the legislation was voted on in the European Parliament in October 2022. He was then a member of the Consumer Protection Commission. “ There will also be a saving, in any case environmental obviously, since it generates tens of thousands of tons of waste. It is estimated that 11 000 at 13 000 tonnes at European level. And our drawers are full of chargers that are no longer useful », he added.
A saving estimated at 250 million euros per year in Europe
How is this decision perceived by sellers and users? Igor Strauss from RFI went to a telephone store on a shopping street in eastern Paris.
