If Paris sees its population decline year after year, this is not the case for the Seine-Saint-Denis which is constantly gaining new inhabitants as proven by the latest figures from INSEE. The most populous department in Île-de-France after Paris with 1,681,725 inhabitants, Seine-Saint-Denis experiences stronger demographic dynamism within the region: between 2016 and 2022, it gained 12,500 inhabitants each year (i.e. +0.76% per year) due to a natural balance still clearly in surplus (+1.14%), in connection with the youth of its population. The natural balance in Seine-Saint-Denis is the highest in mainland France.
The municipalities of Seine-Saint-Denis which are gaining inhabitants and those which are losing them
Within the Greater Paris Metropolis (MGP), demographic growth is driven mainly by the territories of Seine-Saint-Denis, close to the capital. The most dynamic are notably those of Est Ensemble (Bagnolet, Bobigny, Bondy, Le Pré-Saint-Gervais, Les Lilas, Montreuil, Noisy-le-Sec, Pantin, Romainville) and Grand Paris Grand Est (Clichy-sous-Bois, Coubron, Gagny, Gournay-sur-Marne, le Raincy, les Pavillons-sous-Bois, Livry-Gargan, Montfermeil, Neuilly-Plaisance, Neuilly-sur-Marne, Noisy-le-Grand, Rosny-sous-Bois, Vaujours and Villemomble), where the population is increasing at least twice as fast as the average in the region.
To a lesser extent, Plaine Commune (Aubervilliers, La Courneuve, Épinay-sur-Seine, L'Île-Saint-Denis, Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, Saint-Denis, Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, Stains and Villetaneuse) is also on a good dynamic.
The municipality showing the strongest growth is that of Romainville (+4.9%/year), ahead of Bagnolet (+2.6%), Pierrefitte-sur-Seine (+2.2%), Neuilly-sur-Marne ( +1.9) and Île-Saint-Denis (+1.8%).
Despite this good departmental health, certain municipalities still show a decline in their population: Le Bourget (-1.5%), Le Pré-Saint-Gervais (-1%), Villetaneuse (-0.9%), Bondy ( -0.7%) and Épinay-sur-Seine (-0.6%).
The most populated municipalities are Saint-Denis (115,237 inhabitants, +0.6%, Montreuil (110,758, +0.4%), Aubervilliers (89,489, +0.7%), Aulnay-sous-Bois ( 86,360, +0.3%) and Noisy-le-Grand (71,632, +1.2%)
