Bab Assalam invites Sylvain Julien
In 2010, Bab Assalam gave his last concert in Syria at the citadel of Aleppo, alongside around ten whirling dervishes. It was a party. Then came war, massacres and exile. The group now reunited in France reinvents the myth with a concert tour. In the company of circus artist Sylvain Julien, the myth of the whirling dervishes revives the Sufi trance and becomes enchanting circus poetry.
Bab Assalam composes a westernized version of the dervish circle. Neither text, nor video, nor story, but a musical suite transcended by the art of the circus artist, which brings together the voices of the two Syrian musicians, surrounded by ouds and percussion, with the contemporary sounds of the bass clarinet and the electro.
