In Antwerp, a family drama that turns Amy and Hamid into suspects

Last Sunday, in Hoboken, near Antwerp, a young couple, Amy, 20, and Hamid, 23, experienced a personal tragedy with the sudden death of their daughter Nadia Nour, only four weeks old. Following this death, described as “suspicious” by the authorities, they were taken to the police station and questioned for around ten hours before being released.

At first light on Sunday, Hamid was awakened by his daughter's irregular breathing, reports The Latest News. The infant, who is sleeping in their room, has a nosebleed. Worried, the parents rush to the hospital, leaving their apartment behind with the door wide open and the lights on. On the way, Amy tries to revive the baby, following the instructions of the emergency services, contacted by telephone.

At the hospital, a medical team takes care of Nadia Nour, whose heart is still beating weakly. Despite doctors' efforts, the baby was pronounced dead half an hour later. It’s a massive blow for the couple. They barely have time to say goodbye to their daughter when police officers show up. The death being considered “suspicious”, the parents were taken to the police station for questioning, without being able to contact their families.

At the Berchem police station, Amy and Hamid undergo blood samples, a usual procedure in this type of case. A series of interrogations followed, experienced as an additional ordeal by the couple already overwhelmed by grief. Amy feels singled out. Hamid, for his part, struggles to understand how he could have gone from the status of a loving father to that of a suspect, in the space of a few hours.

After about ten hours, the couple was finally released, without detailed explanations. They subsequently learned that, although the cause of Nadia Nour's death remained undetermined, the investigation did not reveal any traces of violence. Amy, upset, recalls Hamid's attachment to his children and the tenderness he showed to Nadia Nour.

The couple is now awaiting authorization to repatriate their daughter's body to Morocco for burial, once the remains are released. “We always called her our little angel,” confide the parents, “and she will always be.”
