Without shouting or hitting, the mayor of Quebec wants Canada to stand up to the Trump administration in the face of the president-elect's tariff threats.

He immediately rejects Aplaventrism as a strategy and expresses his faith in the country's ability to defend its interests.

For Bruno Marchand, Canada does not have to kneel before President Trump or try to please him at all costs. He is convinced that the country has all the necessary capacity to negotiate on an equal footing with its southern neighbor.

“Someone like Trump, unfortunately, is a way of negotiating from another era. It's “I'm going to crush you, I'm going to play who crushes the other”, then when he crushes someone, he doesn't have any more respect. It’s not because he crushes someone that he arrests,” expresses the mayor of Quebec, illustrating his firm position in the face of Trump, in opposition to that of aplaventrism.

“He’s an intimidator, this guy, we don’t let ourselves be intimidated.”

Not worried about Quebec

Although he recognizes that American tariffs exceeding 10% could severely affect several businesses in the region, Bruno Marchand says he is confident that Quebec's economy will remain solid even in the event of such an imposition.

For the mayor, public investments in projects like the island bridge, the tramway and the Newton garage are beneficial for the local economy. They provide jobs to the region and strengthen the city's economic resilience in the face of potential U.S. tariff sanctions.

“We hope that Canada will do its job and ensure that there are no tariffs.”

Quebec: city of entrepreneurship

To defend Quebec's economy in the face of the tariff threat from the Trump administration, Bruno Marchand believes that it is essential to support local businesses and strengthen bilateral relations, as he plans to do with San Antonio, after the have already done with Boston and New York.

He also wishes to continue to develop a solid entrepreneurial fabric in Quebec, capable of protecting businesses from external shocks.

“We want people who are entrepreneurial, from idea to sale, from research to design, but also from all phases of a business,” explains the mayor, illustrating his ambition to make Quebec the most entrepreneurial city in Canada.

The mayor's wishes in 2025

Bruno Marchand plans to take advantage of the holiday season to rest and come back more energetic than ever for the new year.

“I’m already in good shape, my team must already be scared. When I come back, I’m going to be on fire.”

For Quebec and its residents, the mayor wishes to maintain and strengthen what, according to him, distinguishes the city: the conviction that nothing is impossible.

“I wish us this collective enthusiasm which characterizes us, which makes us have the impression that there is nothing that is impossible for us”, he expresses for 2025. “When we come together, it “There isn't a wall high enough to stop us from passing through,” he concludes.
