An announcement that is sure to provoke a reaction. Manuel Valls, former Prime Minister and former Minister of the Interior, was appointed this Monday, December 23 to the post of Minister of Overseas Territories by Prime Minister François Bayrou. He thus replaces François-Noël Buffet.
This 62-year-old politician made his debut in politics in the 1980s when he became actively involved with the Socialist Party (PS). We had to wait until 2012 to see Manuel Valls enter a ministry.
Towards a firm immigration policy?
At the time, and after a career as First Vice-President of the Île-de-France Regional Council and Mayor of Evry, the politician was appointed Minister of the Interior under the government of Jean- Marc Ayrault, Prime Minister of François Hollande.
For two years, until 2014, Manuel Valls firmly tackled security and immigration issues. A “firm line” which earned him his appointment to Matignon in 2014. During his mandate, which lasted two years, Manuel Valls implemented controversial economic and social reforms such as the Labor law.
In 2017, he ran in the socialist primary for the presidential election but lost to Benoît Hamon. He then began a political career in Spain before returning to France.
