In its fall, the construction machine hit a five-story building, causing “some damage to the balconies but no risk of collapse for the moment”indicates the Haute-Corse fire and rescue service (Sis 2B), while specifying at the start of the evening that “recognitions are still underway”.

No casualties have been reported.

“The first information we have is that the crane collapsed on a building under construction and fell on the building opposite, explains Arnaud Millemann, secretary general of the Haute-Corse prefecture, present on the scene. At this stage, the findings only indicate material damage, with a veranda which unfortunately burst under the impulse. We must ensure that the part of the crane which faces the building remains in its current state and does not fall, either on the garden side or on the street side at night.”

Antoinette, who lives in the building, immediately went out onto her terrace after hearing “a loud noise” :

“We were back a quarter of an hour before it happened, she explains from her balcony. There was a big gust of wind, very, very strong. After that, we heard a loud noise, like scrap metal. We went out and saw, we understood that it was the crane. We were scared when we heard the noises. We didn't realize it right away. We never thought about the crane. We were like, 'What's going on?'”

The testimony of Antoinette, 87 years old, who lives in the building affected by the fall of the crane:

If the accident appears spectacular, the damage seems, for the moment, to remain modest. “The track is cut and a car has been damaged,” according to Sis 2B.

Firefighters, civil security, law enforcement, municipal and prefectural authorities as well as the developer in charge of the site went to the site.

Security operations will continue into the evening. It could take several hours or even days to free the crane.

“We will arrange to block the street and to avoid any other accident or accident, specifies the representative of the Haute-Corse prefecture. On the other hand, we will put in place an intelligent blockade to allow people to access their homes, including those who live in the “Jardins de Bastia” building which was hit by one end of the crane so that they can return safely to their homes. We will begin the dismantling this Monday.”

An investigation has been opened. It will have to determine under what circumstances the construction equipment, although designed to withstand episodes of wind, could have fallen.
