Death of Carcassonnais Nadir at La Conte: four years in prison required for the driver retried on appeal, deliberated on January 16, 2025

Thursday December 19, 2024, the man who caused the death of Nadir Téfiani and seriously injured Imad, on February 29, 2020 in , was retried before the Court of Appeal. A four-year sentence was requested, but the decision will not be rendered until January 16, 2025.

On September 11, 2024, during his first instance trial before the Carcassonne criminal court, he was sentenced to four years in prison, including eighteen months with a probationary suspension for a period of two years. A 45-year-old man was convicted. A deferred committal warrant was then ordered against him (he was incarcerated on September 23)… And it was thus under the escort of penitentiary officers that Léon A., defended by Me Gérard Bouissinet (Carcassonne bar), arrived before the Montpellier Court of Appeal on Thursday, December 19, to once again answer for these terrible facts.

Last September, we remember that the forty-year-old had admitted the facts at a minimum, even though he believed he had nothing to do with it at the start of the legal investigation. He oscillated between denial and guilt. A beginning of redemption since then, which did not prevent him from appealing the judgment rendered by the Carcassonne criminal court.

Today, my client understood that he had some responsibility.

“In the first instance, my client was unable to express himself because he was blocked. He had not given many explanations and everyone was left a little unsatisfied…”indicated Me Gérard Bouissinet. “Since his incarceration, he has worked on himself and he has been able to express himself. He has expressed regrets and asked for forgiveness”continues the Carcassonne lawyer. “He was on narcotics. (cocaine and cannabis) and was driving fast, but everyone must take their share of responsibility in this accident … Today, my client understood that he had some responsibility.” To explain his hit-and-run after the accident,

“we returned to the context of this tragedy in the La Conte district, where a hostile gathering quickly took place…”

Driver of the scooter on the morning of the tragedy, Imad, then 16 years old like his friend Nadir, had deviated from his trajectory before being hit by the defendant's 4X4. He was then driving without a helmet and under drugs. For these acts of “manslaughter by the driver of a land vehicle”, he was tried by the children's court and sentenced to six months in prison.
