Emotion among the staff of the North hospital in Marseille after the attack on a psychiatric doctor this Friday, December 20 at the beginning of the afternoon.
The doctor was assessing a patient in crisis when she stabbed him twice with a Swiss knife in the shoulder.
The doctor was immediately attended to and escaped with two stitches.
This incident had a particular impact on the hospital community. A union representative believes that the management of the establishment must offer better security to caregivers.
Psychiatric medicine struggles to recruit
“The big problem is that already, in our territory of the northern districts, we have great difficulty recruiting psychiatric doctors. With this attack, I can tell you that it will be extremely complicated in the future to be able to bring in”, reacts Karim Djebali, general secretary of the Sud Santé union of Marseille University Hospitals (AP-HM) at the microphone of BFM Marseille Provence. “So we are asking that we be able to upgrade not only the staff but on top of that, the doctors, a difficult territory,” he adds.
The trade unionist also calls for better security for psychiatric units.
The AP-HM management assures us that it “is mobilized” and has launched “an analysis of the event with all the teams concerned”.
