The announcement was made ahead of the meeting between the Girondins de Bordeaux and Stade Rennais, this Sunday, December 22, 2024. Pierre Labat, known as “Pierrot”, died at age 88 during the night.
Born in Landes, he signed his first license with the Girondins de Bordeaux in 1952, as a full-back. Then, between 1980 and the 2000s, Pierrot Labat became the educators of the Girondins.
He marked many players
He scored and guided many players with what has become “the Pierrot Labat method”, at the training center as well as within the first team. We remember in particular Zinédine Zidane, Bixente Lizarazu and Yoann Gourcuff.
“I had the honor of taking care of the technical aspects of thousands of them for over 40 years! What wonderful memories,” he recalled in a Facebook post on August 13.
Still very attached to the club to which he had “given practically 50 years of his life”, Pierrot Labat expressed his sadness while the Girondins de Bordeaux were in the storm. “I love this club so much,” he wrote then. A love that is well returned.
Tributes to the one who “marked the history of the Girondins”
“The Marine and White family in mourning,” the club wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Educator, training center assistant, goalkeeper coach, professional observer, then assistant coach… he marked the history of the Girondins through his passion and dedication.
Since the announcement of his death, many supporters and players pay tribute to “this great gentleman of the club and French football”.
