Dakar, Dec 22 (APS) – The Gorée Sports Union aims to regain and perpetuate its performances a hundred years after its creation, assured its president Augustin Senghor.
''The ambition of this club, of which we have been the custodians through the transmission made by our elders, is to continue to perpetuate performances and to remain the club that it is, a strong symbol of the phoenix always reborn from its ashes,' he said.
Mr. Augustin Senghor, president of the Senegalese Football Federation, spoke at the launch on Saturday on the island of the festivities marking the celebration of the centenary of US Gorée.
''We are trying to keep our sections alive and vibrant to continue to perform even if it is not easy in the current situation,'' he explained.
He insisted on the fact that the Gorée club had produced several champions in several disciplines, citing among others the athletes Amadou Gackou, Amadou Dia Ba (Senegal's only Olympic medalist) and the jumper Mansour Dia).
''Gorée is a great book open to the world, where the story is told in the past, in the present. But we think it will be told in the future,'' added Me Augustin Senghor.
The island club is the vice-dean of Senegalese clubs. US Gorée was created in 1921 and received its receipt in 1933. Joan of Arc of Dakar, created in 1921, is the oldest of Senegalese clubs.
