The chalice to the dregs. After a start to the 2024/25 financial year already marked by debacle with only nine points taken in 15 games and a bottom place in Ligue 1, Montpellier added a new poor performance to its season, Saturday December 21 . The MHSC lost heavily 4-0 as soon as it entered the fray, in the 32nd finals of the Coupe de France, against Puy-en-Velay, a National 2 club.
A logical defeat which will give headaches to the people of Hérault and their supporters during the holidays. It is the second Ligue 1 team to be eliminated on Saturday, after Le Havre, released (1-0) by Saint-Brieuc (National 2).
Still as permeable in defense, the Montpellier team took on water against a team playing four divisions lower, notably suffering 22 shots, including 10 on target. Opposite, the Ponots played hard by opening the score just before the break with a long free kick pushed deep by central defender Maël Zogba (43rd) taking advantage of the opposing defensive feverishness. It was then Nicolas Pays who made the break a quarter of an hour from the end of regulation time (75th) before the MHSC completely gave up and offered two goals to Yann Diebold (78th), then Rodney Mayela ( 90th).
With a very worrying face once again, Montpellier, in addition to being eliminated, plunges a little deeper into the crisis just before taking a few days of rest before re-attacking preparation for a vital second part of the season. Meals at the Christmas table for MHSC players and supporters may be less festive after this meeting.
