A major winter storm hits the Atlantic provinces

Large accumulations of snow are expected Saturday in the Atlantic provinces as a winter storm hits the region hard.

Winter storm warning alerts are in effect across the Atlantic provinces for Saturday.

Southeastern New Brunswick recorded accumulations of 10 cm overnight from Friday to Saturday.

Kent County and the Miramichi area should expect additional snow accumulations of up to 10 to 15 cm by Saturday evening, with wind gusts of 70 km/h.

Due to weather conditions, Air Canada is asking travelers to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.

The GRC recommends that motorists avoid travel on Highway 2, between Moncton and Nova Scotia, due to road conditions and poor visibility.

Large accumulations Saturday in NS

Environment Canada says strong winds will reduce visibility throughout the day Saturday, particularly in the northernmost part of Nova Scotia.

The northern part of the province and the Annapolis Valley will receive heavy snow and blowing snow with accumulations of up to 30 centimetres, says Ryan Snoddonmeteorologist from CBC.

In Atlantic Coast counties and the eastern part of the province, another 5 cm is expected to fall Saturday afternoon.

In the Halifax area, freezing rain added to the snow that fell overnight from Friday to Saturday.

A winter storm watch is also in effect for western Cape Breton, where 15 to 30 centimeters of snow are expected between Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Boats traveling between Cape Breton and Newfoundland have also canceled their crossings for the day. Ferry travel has also been canceled between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

Many flights at Halifax Airport have been canceled.

Wind warnings in effect on the Confederation Bridge

Up to 25 cm of snow could fall on Prince Edward Island before Saturday evening and gusts of 80 km/h will blow across the province.

A wind warning is in effect for the Confederation Bridge, which could result in crossing restrictions between Saturday and Sunday.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, strong winds and freezing rain in some areas are expected in several areas this afternoon.
