Limoges, friend of cryptocurrencies? Like the town of Talence, in Gironde, the first town in France to have accepted payments in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, elected official Jérémy Eldid (PRG) wants Limoges not to miss the boat. He wrote to this effect to the mayor and the president of the agglomeration.
Why want to make Limoges a crypto-friendly city?
“Our city suffers from a lack of dynamism and, at the same time, we are seeking to develop businesses in the city center. However, we are in a national and international context where countries are equipping themselves with crypto, making reserves, like gold. Cryptocurrency is a real subject. Limoges must stay up to date, not miss the train that is moving. »
But concretely, what are you waiting for?
“That the mayor and the president of the agglomeration play a facilitating role. Basically, we should create a working group on the subject, set up a partnership with a payment platform (like Binance Pay or Lyzi for example, regulated by the Financial Markets Authority), raise merchants' awareness of this new type. payment. I spoke about it to a trader who said to me the other day: why not, but how does it work? »
You indicate in your letter that the example of Talence is interesting.
“Yes and above all the example of a butcher from Talence, one of the first in the 80s to have accepted the blue card. He was considered crazy at the time. We saw the subsequent development of credit card payments. There, he does the same with cryptocurrency. He puts a lot of effort into this. »
Do you really think this could work?
“Honestly, most crypto users are very young (48% of crypto holders are under 35). Despite the increase in funds registered on cryptocurrencies, the supply to spend them is low. It's the future. Limoges could, this time, be a pioneer, organizing conferences on the subject. We could bring together traders, influencers, experts on the subject, and why not carry out fundraising rounds to finance projects. Cryptocurrencies are not a bubble that risks bursting, there is really a reality, a subject that we must take into account. And then we also have a luxury clientele who could use crypto for purchases at Weston, Smuggler, Bernardaud, etc. »
But is it used elsewhere?
“Yes in Talence so at around fifteen merchants, but also at Printemps in Paris. The financial windfall is enormous. More than 12 million French people hold cryptocurrencies. In 2024, between 32.5 and 42.5 billion in France have been invested in cryptocurrency. »
What would this change for traders?
“Absolutely nothing negative. Merchants would not pay any commission, would be paid in euros via the platform. The only risk they would take is to have even more customers. It is therefore a bet on the future which does not involve any risk. »
