Aristide Olivier has said it many times since he became mayor of Caen (Calvados): “Education is the top priority. » In 2024-2025, 20 million euros are dedicated to this expenditure item. “The community has never invested so much in its school equipment. » The start of the school year marked the launch of three major projects with the reconstruction of the Puits Picard school, and the consolidation of the Duc Rollon and Bicoquet schools, and the Les Vikings nursery and elementary schools.
Rehabilitation considered too complex
In 2025, the municipality intends to continue its efforts so that the 6,000 Caen students can study in the best possible conditions. Next step: the construction of the new Vieira Da Silva school, in the Grace-de-Dieu district, to the south of the Calvadosian city. “ It is currently in a relatively degraded state.presents poor thermal performance, and is oversized in relation to the number of children accommodated,” explained Amandine François-Goguillon, deputy for education, family and early childhood, during the council meeting. municipal of December 16, 2024.
The rehabilitation was considered too complex. It is important today for the City of Caen to be able to offer a comfortable building to schoolchildren and the entire teaching team in order to work and study in the best possible conditions.
An 8 million euro operation
The majority therefore opted for “the reconstruction of the school group”. This future facility, with a surface area of 1,711 m², will accommodate four nursery classes, eight elementary classes and two rest rooms. The development of 1,620 m² of green courtyards, a storage room and courtyards is also planned.
This project, costing 8 million euros, must be developed on the land of part of the school grounds while allowing “school activity to be maintained on the same site”. Initially, this operation will consist of demolishing the “Ados premises” located to the north of the plot “to free up the land necessary for construction”. The current establishment will be demolished once construction is completed.
Opening planned for the start of the 2028 school year
To carry out this project, the City will launch a project management competition in January. The chosen contractor will be appointed at the end of July 2025. The municipality sets very specific objectives for it, such as “providing a comfortable welcome for users during school and extracurricular times” or “making the school visible from avenue du Père-Charles-de-Foucauld” to give meaning to the positioning of the site in its urban context.
It will also have to design a sustainable and efficient building in order to optimize its ecological footprint. The construction must be as compact as possible, so as to minimize investment, maintenance and operating costs.
Finally, the project manager must deliver the new school in the summer of 2028, “for opening at the start of the school year in September 2028”.
