Two weeks after the fall of al-Assad, Belgium sends an emissary to Damascus

Earlier in the week, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, had already announced the reopening of the EU representation in Syria. Other countries have also said they want to make contact with the new Syrian leaders.

HTS is on the United Nations list of terrorist organizations. Since its victory, however, the movement has displayed a moderate attitude. “We are sending an emissary to Damascus to discuss with the new leaders of Syria,” explained Foreign Minister Bernard Quintin (MR). “The goal is for our diplomat on site to engage in discussions on the future of Syria. We must clearly convey our messages and our expectations for the reconstruction of the country.”

Belgium particularly wants the transition in the country to take place in a peaceful and inclusive manner. Bernard Quintin has already previously expressed Belgium’s desire to see the new regime respect human rights and international law, protect all minorities and respect women.

“In the weeks and months to come, the new leaders must show us and the rest of the world their desire to rebuild Syria based on these principles. We will judge the new leaders by their actions and not just by their words “, he added.

Just like other countries, Belgium aspires to the advent of a stable and secure Syria, first and foremost for the good of the Syrian population. “And that ultimately Syrian refugees in Europe and Belgium will be able to return to their country,” concluded the head of Belgian diplomacy.
