“We are going to renew our entire fleet of diesel buses”
Four articulated busesexpected to fall 2025will run on the first sections which will be put into service.
Their particularity: they will consume hydrogen (H2), a fuel that does not release no greenhouse gases… but water!
“The objective is that, by 2032, we will no longer have diesel buses on vehicles in the Metropolis,” indicated Stéphane Le Foll. “We are going to renew our entire fleet of diesel buses gradually. »
Biogas, electricity and hydrogen
Ultimately, around 10% of the fleet (of the 143 buses) will run on hydrogen, others (10%) will be electric. And the majority (80%) will operate at biogas.
The community’s objective: “decarbonize” mobility in the Metropolis and transport 30 million passengers per year.
A question of autonomy
These hydrogen buses are intended to use the three Chronolines (C4, C5 and C6). “The commercial distances that must be covered require having a autonomy sufficient,” explained the elected official. “On electric, we would not have this autonomy. »
Either 320 to 400 km before recharging the six tanks : located on the roof, next to a fuel cell and batteriesthey can contain 5 kg of hydrogen each.
Nearly a million euros per bus
Inside this bus 18 meters long : 35 seats, USB sockets, surveillance cameras, heat pump, access ramp (and two places) for people with reduced mobility.
Mercedes-Benz won the tender with its eCitaro Fuel Cell.
Superior to a vehicle with a thermal engine, its cost purchase price: €1,059,240 (including tax).
A point in common with Pau!
For the record: while other municipalities have adopted hydrogen-powered public transport, only one locality in France already has such articulated H2 buses…
It is about Pauthe stronghold of the new Prime Minister, François Bayrou. The capital of Béarn had equipped the “first line in the world”, called Fébus.
New colors revealed
This Thursday, the new colors of these Chronolignes buses were also revealed (photo gallery below).
This new livery, dominant bluewith touches of red, is inspired by that specially installed on the trams from the centenary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It will thus gradually replace orange in the fleet of the Setram.
The public will be able to discover the machine again, during the market, at the foot of the cathedral, Saturday December 21, in the morning.
