We will soon have to pay more attention to the signage at the entrances to the municipalities of the Greater Nancy Metropolis. ZFE (Low Emission Zone) zone entry signs have appeared in recent weeks in all the municipalities of the Greater Nancy Metropolis in order to inform drivers that they are preparing to engage in a restricted traffic area according to the Crit’air category to which their vehicle corresponds.

Imposed by law, from January 1, 2025, on 32 new communities of more than 150,000 inhabitants, the ZFE-m is established on the territory of the Greater Nancy Metropolis. A measure developed with the aim of improving air quality and reducing emissions of atmospheric pollutants.

The aim will be to prevent the circulation of the most polluting vehicles, but above all to help the owners of these vehicles so that they can change their mobility either to change vehicles or even transform their vehicle into an electric vehicle.“, indicated during a press point this Tuesday, December 17, Laurence Wieser, Metropolitan Councilor responsible for active mobility.

On the perimeter of the Greater Nancy Metropolis, the system will come into force from January 1, 2025 and will initially only concern heavy goods vehicles, buses/coaches and light utility vehicles being classified Crit’Air 5 or Unclassifiedwhich will no longer be authorized to circulate in the ZFE-m of the Greater Nancy Metropolis. A marginal proportion of vehicles in circulation “this represents less than 1% of the heavy goods vehicle fleet and around 9% of utility vehicles“, underlines Laurence Wieser.

The perimeter of this ZFE, operational 24/7, includes the 20 municipalities of the Greater Nancy Metropolis. However, these traffic restrictions will not apply to the A31, A33 and A330 motorway axes in both directions of traffic, to the M674 / M83 axes, to the access roads to the “P+R” Laxou-Sapinière park and ride areas, Nancy-Gentilly, Vandoeuvre-Brabois, Vandoeuvre Parc des Expositions, Laneuveville-devant-Nancy, Jarville-la-Malgrange, Mouzimpré, Seichamps, Houdemont – Gare or even access to the M674 from the P+R of Jarville-la-Malgrange.

According to the deployment schedule, on January 1, 2028, this ban will be extended in a second phase to light vehicles (cars and motorized 2/3/4 wheels) classified Crit’Air 5 or Unclassified.

Exemptions for crossing the metropolis

Will all vehicles classified Crit’Air 5 or Unclassified be affected from January 1, 2025 by a total ban on circulation within the Greater Nancy Metropolis?

No, the low emissions zone deployed in the municipalities of the Greater Nancy Metropolis will benefit from several exceptions, firstly national. Exceptions intended for the circulation of vehicles of general interest such as vehicles of the Ministry of Defense, vehicles carrying a parking card for disabled people or a “mobility inclusion” card bearing the words “parking”, as well as temporarily for public transport service vehicles.

In addition, the Greater Nancy Metropolis specifies that it has established “local exemptions“, for example: for technical or economic reasons (support for companies in difficulty, etc.), for medical reasons (regular appointments linked to major treatments), to take into account delivery times for the new vehicle, to the transport of perishable foodstuffs, for “collector vehicles” (over 30 years old) or even for the maintenance of solidarity activities.

The community will also set up a “ZFE 24h Pass”, limited to 24 days per year, which will allow road users whose vehicles do not comply to travel for a limited period in the ZFE-m. .

In parallel with the deployment of the ZFE, the Métropole du Grand Nancy emphasizes the aid available for vehicle owners Crit’air 4, Crit’air 5 and Unclassified, detained for at least 2 years. Assistance that can be requested for professionals and individuals by prior appointment with a mobility advisor to begin the process. To reinforce compliance with the restrictions imposed by the ZFE, coercive financial measures have been put in place by the State against offenders. On the perimeter of the Greater Nancy Metropolis, “lFines may be issued when the vehicle is parked by the municipal police or the national police,” adds Laurence Weiser. Video verbalization should only be effective in 2026.

What fines do violators incur? They vary depending on the category of vehicle concerned. The amount of the fine for coach, bus and heavy goods vehicle drivers can reach up to 135 euros
