The number of bags abandoned at Strasbourg station (Bas-Rhin) in 2024 is significant.

“This year, we counted more than 300. It is often occasional travelers who forget their backpack on board trains,” says Stéphanie Dommange, regional director of SNCF TER Grand Est.

Careless mistakes

In any case, to ensure that these suitcases are not a danger, the Strasbourg station has a dog technical team. Stéphanie Dommange underlines that “it is even one of the first stations to be equipped with dogs. » In this case, two Malinois dogs.

15 to 20 minutes of intervention

“These dogs have been trained by approved organizations and they have to pass checks every year,” continues Stéphanie Dommange, explaining that “they check luggage, abandoned suitcases. If they smell something, they stop in front of it. »

According to her, their intervention time “lasts between 15 and 20 minutes. In comparison, a operation led by the deminers can go beyond an hour. »

To further reduce this intervention time, next year, another dog should come complete the team. He is currently training.
