The upgrading of accessibility standards to the platforms of Sète station has been effective since Monday, December 9.
This nearly two-year project will have mobilized six companies and around twenty people on a daily basis to enable the people with reduced mobility or disabilities to access the platforms and take the train independently. The new footbridge was officially inaugurated in the presence of elected officials and funding partners, namely the State, the Occitanie Region, the Department of Hérault, Sète Agglomération Méditerranée and SNCF Gares & Connexions. Today it connects the south of the city to the future station car park located north of the railway tracksserving the railway platforms in passing. Equipped with 4 elevators, the footbridge measures 71 meters long and 4 meters wide.
Improve accessibility
The Sète station and its district have been the subject of an urban development program for several years, with the creation of a multimodal exchange hub (PEM)whose jurisdiction falls to Sète agglopôle Méditerranée, excluding access to the quays. An important step had already been achieved with the redesign of the station's southern forecourt (sea side), including a bus station and new car parks. In 2023, a new stage of this project has been initiated with the accessibility of the station platforms. Under project management SNCF Gares & Connexionsthis phase made it possible to achieve in particular the creation of a pedestrian bridge; bringing the station underpass up to accessibility standards; the renewal of the cladding or hydraulic works.
A total cost of €8M
With a total cost of €8M, the footbridge was financed by the State (8%), the Occitanie Region (21%), the Hérault Department (1%), Sète Agglomération Méditerranée (44%) and SNCF Gares & Connexions (27%), who is also the project owner.
What developments are coming?
The SAM (Sète agglopôle Méditerranée) is now working to finalize the development you in pairs Northin particular by creating long-term parking with around 220 spacesa pedestrian mall and a bicycle shelter. This space will also welcome the arrival of the greenway from Mèze and Balaruc (co-financed by the State). From this space, cyclists will be able to go to the city center using the footbridge, helped by the high-capacity elevators.
Total cost of the project: €19.7 million
The total cost of the modernization, accessibility and redevelopment project of the Sète station and its district amounts to €19.7 million. It is made possible thanks to co-financing from the State (€2.2M), the Occitanie Region (€6.3M, including €2.8M from European Regional Development Funds), the Hérault Department (1, 2M€), Sète Agglopôle Méditerranée (5.5M€) and SNCF Gares & Connexions (4.5M€).
