Public consultation on a request for exemption for a study on the Balearic green toad in Corsica, file submitted by the Conservatoire des Espaces Naturels Corsica
“Protected species” exemption request file for capture with immediate release with biological sample collection
The request has been filed with DREAL
regional directorate for the environment, planning and housing of Corsica, by the Conservatoire des Espaces Naturels Corsica on September 30, 2024. It concerns a study on the origin and structuring of Balearic green toad populations in Corsica (Balearic green toad). This study is part of the Green Toad PNA.
The request concerns the following strictly protected amphibian species:

The quantity would be around 300 individuals over 3 years, for samples of DNA materials for a genetic study, saliva taken from the mouth of the Green Toad using a swab.
This request was submitted for a period of 3 years (2025-2027).
The implementation of this study requires a waiver, which is based on:
- capture with immediate release;
- the intentional disruption of specimens for biometric measurements and identification through photographs of profiles;
- the collection of genetic material (saliva using a swab);
- the possession of dead specimens or biological samples and their use.
This protected species falls under the ministerial decree of January 8, 2021 establishing the list of amphibians and reptiles represented in metropolitan territory, protected throughout the national territory and the terms of their protection
The protected species: the Green toad is within ministerial competence. It falls under the decree of July 9, 1999 establishing the list of protected vertebrate species threatened with extinction in France and whose distribution area exceeds the territory of a department.
This protected species requires an opinion from the National Nature Protection Council (CNPN).
