Journey of a daring artist

The exhibition highlights an exceptional woman and artist and highlights her pioneering role, often underestimated, in the birth of artistic modernity. It reveals the great freedom of Suzanne Valadon who, not truly adhering to any movement, except perhaps her own, chose to paint reality and represent bodies without artifice or voyeurism. She is thus the first woman to paint a full-frontal male nude in large format.

An artist to rediscover

The journey of almost 200 works, drawings and paintings – the artist's two preferred mediums –, divided into five thematic sections, allow us to trace her unique itinerary from her beginnings as a favorite model in all of Montmartre, to her artistic recognition, which came very early, by her peers and the critical.

This unprecedented dive into his work reveals his friendly and artistic relationships with the bohemian painters that its incontestable influence on the Parisian scene thanks to the active support of his artist and gallery owners friends.

The exhibition route draws on the wealth of national collections, notably that of the Center Pompidou, the most important, but also the Musée d'Orsay and the Orangerie. Exceptional loans from Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art de New York or the Fondation de l'Hermitage and important private collections complete it.

It has been almost sixty years since his work was shown in . The exhibition Suzanne Valadon. A world of one's own offers a complete rereading of his work and his artistic approach.
