On the front page of the November 13, 2024 edition of the Norman Awakeninga message must have caught more than one reader's attention: “An April Fool's joke has gone around! Many believed it. But we are not closed.”

Aurélie and Sébastien Boullay, the owners of the gourmet restaurant L’tape Louis XIII in the delegated commune of Beaumesnil (Eure), were victims of false information. A rumor that the owners could have done without in this year when inflation has left its mark on the small restaurant.

“We had to act”

Aurélie and Sébastien Boullay admit, they had never heard of this rumor before customers came to tell them about it. The rumor: the Beaumesnil restaurant is closed.

“They told us to take it seriously,” says Sébastien Boullay. That they had heard it several times in Bernay. It was completely benevolent”

If we decided to issue a denial, it is because these clients are fairly well-known people in the area. We know they speak to a lot of people.

They question suppliers who also work in Bernay, confirming to them that they have heard the information.

But where does this rumor come from? The restaurateur thinks that people were talking about the butcher's restaurantlocated opposite the town hall, which closed at the end of May:

Maybe some people didn't know that there were two restaurants in Beaumesnil and thought of us.

Aurélie Boullaye, co-owner of the restaurant L’tape Louis XIII

“The butcher’s restaurant looked more like a brasserie so people could have made a mistake,” she continues.

Owners can only make assumptions, but one thing is certain: any false information can impact their business.

“It’s true that we felt a drop in attendance. There is also the economic context which must play a role,” analyzes Aurélie Boullay. No luck: at the same time, the restaurant's Facebook account was hacked. “I had to recreate one, where I made a denial. But we had lost all our subscribers,” relates the trader.

The gourmet restaurant was recovering from the health crisis, and had to face inflation.

But the truth has now been established and customers can enjoy the special atmosphere of this restaurant located in a former presbytery, be served by Aurélie and enjoy the dishes cooked by Sébastien.
