Trade relations with the United States are likely to be complex in the coming years. Should Canada diversify its trading partners a little more?
Listen to Michèle Boisvert discuss the subject with host Philippe Cantin.
“We have 74% of our exports – I’m talking about Quebec – which go to the United States: 117% increase in 15 years. We’ve been saying to ourselves for ages: why don’t we diversify? And obviously, we’re not doing it,” says Michèle Boisvert, who was general delegate in Paris for the Quebec government for five years.
“As general delegate of Quebec. The mandate I was given was to increase exports to France. Because yes, we increased them by 36% during my mandate. I’m quite happy. But trade between France and Quebec amounts to almost 6 billion dollars. It’s nothing at all. We look at the United States: it’s 87 billion. A country like France and Quebec, no more exchanges than 6 billion dollars? When we take imports and exports. It’s ridiculous.”
