This Thursday, December 5, 2024, a large-scale national strike is organized in National Education to denounce reforms considered punitive. Supported by almost unanimity of public service unions, this mobilization aims to contest the extension of the waiting period to three days, the reductions in compensation for sick leave and the job cuts announced for 2025.
This Thursday, December 5, a big National Education strike is expected everywhere in rancid conditions and especially in Paris! National education unions, supported by organizations such as the FSU, UNSA Éducation and SUD Éducation, confirmed their call to demonstrate December 5, 2024.
This mobilization, the first in a planned series, mainly targets measures of Minister Guillaume Kasbarian. These reforms include in particular the extension of the waiting period for the sick leavea divisive measure. Currently set at one day, this deadline could increase to three days, a change that the unions consider deeply unfair. They denounce an increased precariousness of the most modest agents, particularly women, often over-represented in these professional categories.
The impact on sick leave pay is also at the heart of the demands. A reduction in compensation from 100% to 90% is seen as a social setback, worsening already difficult conditions. This decision is in addition to the announced removal of 4,000 positions in schools, a measure criticized for its repercussions on the quality of teaching and the working conditions of teachers.
The unions are demanding the outright withdrawal of these reforms, described as “Kasbarian measures”. Among their demands are also a revaluation of the index pointthe reestablishment of GIPA, and a real status for AESH (accompanying students with disabilities). They call for a salary increase without compensation and for job creation to reduce the number of classes.
At the same time, the government's decision to reduce the public service budget by 1.2 billion euros for 2025, announced by Prime Minister Michel Barnier, is fueling anger. According to the unions, this budget cut could jeopardize the operation of public schools.
The slogan “Everyone on strike on December 5” reflects the determination of a movement that could extend to other sectors of the public service. If certain unions, like FO, prefer to act independently by proposing a renewable strike, the day of December 5 promises a big mobilization for National Education and beyond.
