The government of Canada reiterates its support for community celebrations of the Fête nationale de l’Acadie

MONCTON, NB, July 2, 2024 /CNW/ – L’honorable Ginette Petitpas TaylorMinister of Veterans Affairs, Associate Minister of Defence and Member of Parliament for MonctonRiverviewDieppeand the honorable Dominic LeBlancMinister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs, and Member of Parliament for Beauséjour, are proud to confirm the renewal of funding for the Fête nationale de l’Acadie celebrations. The ministers made this announcement on behalf of the Honourable Pascale St-OngeMinister of Canadian Heritage.

This investment of $1.5 million over three years, allocated starting in 2024, will support more than a hundred activities organized over the next three years to mark the Fête nationale de l’Acadie and give the Acadian people opportunities to come together and express their pride and cultural identity.

The government of Canada recognizes the importance of highlighting the contribution of the Acadian people to the social and cultural fabric of our country. The renewal of this funding demonstrates its commitment to promoting the development of Francophone communities living in minority settings.

The Fête nationale de l’Acadie is funded by the Celebrations and Commemorations Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage.

The Celebrations and Commemorations Program aims to achieve the following objectives: ensure access to celebrations held in all regions of the Canadato enable Canadians to appreciate the country’s cultural, ethnic, linguistic and geographic diversity; to ensure access to commemorations of national interest that pay tribute to people, places, symbols, anniversaries and notable achievements; and to create opportunities to participate in national celebrations and commemorations that foster pride and a sense of belonging among Canadians.

It was in 1881, during the first national convention of Acadians in Memramcookin New Brunswick, that August 15 is designated as the national Acadian holiday, now called the Fête nationale de l’Acadie.

In 2003, the government of Canada adopt the Act establishing the National Acadian Day.
