The ordinary session of the Council of the Oriental Region, initially scheduled for July 1 and 4, was postponed until the election of a president following the Malian affair in which Abdenbi Bioui is implicated.

During the opening session of this meeting, which took place in the presence of the Wali of the Oriental region, governor of the prefecture of Oujda, Mouad Jamaï, the members present unanimously approved the proposal to postpone all items on the agenda to the next session, which will be convened by the elected president in the company of the members of his new office.

The wilaya of the Oriental region had announced the opening of applications (June 27-July 1) for the election of the new president of the region, following the vacancy of the post.

The president of the ordinary session of the Council for the month of July, Mohamed Moknif indicated that the situation that the region is experiencing “requires the mobilization of efforts to successfully get through this delicate phase, by demonstrating seriousness and responsibility and by establishing the higher interest of the region as the basis for the Council’s action.”

The agenda for this session included the examination and approval of several draft partnership agreements covering different areas.

These include the draft contract for the execution of the region’s tourist roadmap, and draft amendments to the partnership agreements relating to the development of the tourist resort of Saïdia and the medinas of Oujda, Figuig and Debdou, in addition to the creation and activation of a support mechanism for investments and small, medium and very small tourist businesses in the region and the development of an investment support tool to build new hotel units, infrastructures and sports facilities.

The agenda also includes the examination and approval, in particular, of a draft framework agreement for cooperation between the Oriental region and that of Trarza in Mauritania, a partnership agreement within the framework of the African Fund for Support to Decentralized International Cooperation of Local Authorities (FACDI) for joint financing for the implementation of a project to support the strengthening of South-South cooperation between the Oriental region and its partners in African regions.
