Entry into force of updates to the Income Assistance Regulations

Two regulations that came into force on July 1, 2024, support changes to the Northwest Territories (NWT) Income Assistance Program.

Here they are :

  • Amendments to the existing Income Assistance Regulations;
  • The new Regulation on income assistance for seniors and persons with disabilities.

As announced in June, these changes will increase benefit levels and income exemptions, and reduce barriers to accessing income assistance in the NWT.

Changes to the legislative context are outlined in this Plain Language Summary. They were informed by feedback received during engagement sessions with a variety of partners and stakeholders, including Indigenous governments, non-government organizations, past and present clients, property owners and suppliers, Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) departments, and the public.

We also invited the public to consult on the draft regulations through the “Have Your Say” process. The results of this in-depth review of the Income Assistance Program were then summarized in a What We Heard Report.

These changes are intended to improve the accessibility of the NWT Income Assistance Program and ensure that residents who need it most can gain greater financial security so they can participate in community life and take advantage of the opportunities available to them.
