The results of the first round of the legislative elections, on Sunday, June 30, were particularly scrutinized in France, but also in Europe. By electing a majority of deputies from the National Rally (RN), France, a founding member of the European Union and a driving force in business, could be breaking away from European policies. An event feared by some, such as the Italian newspaper “il manifesto”.

Find on our dedicated pages the results of the first round of legislative elections in Paris, Lyon, Marseille as well as the results of the second round from 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 7.

On Tuesday, July 2, the political daily founded in 1969 by a dissident fringe of the Italian Communist Party, put Emmanuel Macron on its front page, in the shadows, next to a phrase that was, to say the least, evocative: “Veni vidi Vichy” (“I came, I saw Vichy”).

In addition to evoking the famous phrase of Julius Caesar, the title recalls France’s dark past, when the authorities established the Vichy regime in June 1940 under the occupation of Nazi Germany.

“Il manifesto” writes in the introduction: “By governing, he opened the door to the right. By calling early elections, he opened it wide. And now, Macron remains vague about the withdrawal of his candidates in the face of the New Popular Front. The left with its candidates is “blocking”, but the second round can take France back to its dark past.”

Another front page from the country led by Giorgia Meloni, also the head of a far-right party, has caused a stir in recent hours, that of the Milanese daily Il Foglio, rather to the right of the political spectrum. This time, Marine Le Pen occupies the front page next to the current president of her party. “The devil wears Bardella”, is the headline.

All eyes are now on next Sunday and the second round of voting. On July 7, the far right could win a large number of seats in the National Assembly. Unless the rest of the political class blocks it.
