She rang the bell at 11:49 and 12:29 approximately: enough to question the inhabitants of Lyon who heard it this Tuesday, July 2, 2024. The population alert siren, usually tested every first Wednesday of the month, rang out in Lyon twice around noon.

No apparent reason

People who were nearby from the 1st and 5th arrondissements from Lyon heard the sound signal specific to the population alert sirens, this national civil security system which aims to warn the population of the arrival of an imminent danger so that they can protect themselves.

There is reason to be concerned, therefore, since no communication about a possible test of the device this Tuesday had been broadcast, neither by the prefecture nor by the City of Lyon. “A cat jumped on the button, what’s happening? It’s supposed to be tomorrow at noon, not today at 11:49,” asked a user of the X network (ex-Twitter).

A simple “handling error”

Asked by Lyon newsthe Rhône prefecture was able to provide explanations. It was a “handling error by the technicians of the company in charge of maintaining the sirens”. No malicious cat or threat to the health of the inhabitants of Lyon, then.

In short, it is a false alarm. The people of Lyon will be able to hear this particular sound again, in its entirety this time, on Wednesday, July 3 at noon.
